In art this year I learned a lot about colors and the meanings that are involved with art that I never realized before. I always looked at art like it was just boring and anyone could do it but it is a very hard profession to be talented at. You really need a good meaning for people to see you piece and love it. If it’s just a picture of something random then people will not really care about it but if it is an abstract piece with things that resemble certain objects people will be very interested in it and will be willing to pay money. I am a business major and every time I think about this I just think about how hard it would be to make money in this profession and I have more respect for the artists that make it in the world. I have really enjoyed doing the projects in class because it makes me see how hard it is to draw things that Picasso and other great artists have made. It also shows me how long some of those pieces have taken them because my pieces usually take me three or four hours and they are not very good. The pieces that they make must take them weeks or even months. I also have learned a lot of different styles that certain painters and artists use. I never really knew about all these different techniques and it is interesting to see how they do their work.

Balance and Rhythm

Balance and rhythm are very important things in a piece of art. Balance is needed so that people look at the picture and see symmetry. This makes the person’s brain focus on the piece and feel good. Rhythm is also a very important thing so that the piece flows and doesn’t have points that stand out too much. This makes it easy for the reader to look at the piece and it makes them enjoy the piece more. Balance and rhythm evoke emotion by the way that they are placed. Each time they are placed they mean a different thing. imbalance makes the person feel uncomfortable because of the laws of gravity. When they look at it doesn’t process in their brain like it should. Rhythm goes well with balance when you put them right.

Balance is a very important tool to know about because it can make people look at the piece and wonder how things are stationary in the piece. This can cause a person to be interested in how things were working through piece without seeing the motion.

The most interesting thing that I have learned is how dark and light effect the piece. By changing the shading of the color you can make the art look a lot different. Like the breakfast piece was light for mandy and then when she made it darker the objects stood out more and it looked way better. I am going to use this in my own art now.

Another thing that I have learned is how to use focal points. For my charcoal piece I used all the objects and made the tape stand out. I used line so that it would all point to the tape so the viewers eyes goes right to the tape because it is really white compared to everything else. This is how I have used line in my art after learning this in class.

Another thing that i have learned is having a meaning. This is the most important thing because a piece without meaning isn’t very good. The people need to think about something when they see it or they will get bored while looking at it. Anyone can draw random things and call it art but the meaning behind it is what is hard to do. These are the things that I have learned in class so far.

Extra Credit Exhibit

I thought that the extra exhibit in the tweed center was very good. The punch was extremely good and the food that was provided was also very delicious. I really liked that it was a nature exhibit because I enjoy being outside and in the wild. One of the pieces I looked at was called “Crab Pot”. It was a digital photo that was taken in 2009. This picture reminded me of my favorite show called “Deadliest Catch”. It is about ships in the Bering Sea that go out and catch crab all season long. The television show explains and lets viewers see how the crab are caught and it shows that it is the dangerous job on earth.

The next artwork that I looked at was “Wild Horses”. It was a picture of three horses in a pasture and they were just standing there eating grass. This reminded me of Belle Plain. It was the city that I went to this weekend and it is a small town that has lots of farming and bluffs that were shown in the picture. While I was looking at this there was a song playing in the background called “Life in a Northern Town.” This was a great song that I know from listening to country music and it really set the mood for the piece “Wild Horses”.

The third piece that I looked at was “Reeves Aleutian”. It was a picture of an airplane that was crashed and it had a lot of bullet holes in the wing. I love planes so this piece was very fascinating to look at. I hope to become a pilot some day so I can get my own plane.

Overall I thought this exhibit was entertaining and I had a good time.

Unity

There are many ways to show unity in a piece. You can show it with color and also objects. Like some of the pieces that we looked at yesterday showed these things. You can use color in certain patterns and shapes to make a piece unified. Like the piece we looked at yesterday that had blue, yellow and red. The colors were the only thing that made the piece unified because the rest of it was mostly abstract. You could not tell what it actually was supposed to be if the colors were not there and were used in the pattern that was selected.

Another way that we can make unity in a drawing or photograph is the objects that you put in it. A great example of this was the 36 photos of one girls face. She had different faces for each photo that was taken place. This made it unified because she was consistent in the piece. With this piece there was also a sense of unity because of the blue and yellow colors that were in it. The photos were shaded these colors and it made the piece seem more complete.

I feel that when I use complimentary colors it makes the piece more unified because people’s eyes are more attracted to these colors and enjoy looking at them. I also feel that one thing that really helps with unity is repetition. If you start with one frame of a drawing and you put something there and then you use other frames to build off the first frame it makes the piece better. People like looking at these things to see the progression of the object that is being drawn. These are all ways to show unity in a piece and I am looking forward to using these ideas in upcoming projects.

time and motion

Time and motion are very hard to draw because you need to think about what would happen to the objects if they were really old. Like toast or a bagel for example would be dark and hard. Motion is a very complicated thing to show too because it is a still picture and you do not have more than one slide to show it aa unless you make smaller squares. This can be very effective in showing changes in motion. These two things are in my piece and I feel that I have done a good job showing these features. These features are showed in my piece by having burnt bagels come out of the toaster because it shows that they have been in there way too long. This is a great way for me to include the toaster for the piece and also show the time aspect of it.

The way that I showed motion for my peice was to have the syrup running off of the pancakes. It shows that it once was all on the top and now it has gone onto the floor by gravity that is pulling it down off the plate and onto the tablet. I feel this is why I have showed these aspects very well in my art.

5 Visual Elements

Of the five visual elements I feel that line is the most important to show space. If you have a thick line in the front of the page and as it goes across the page you can make the line skinnier and it will make it appear that it is getting father away from you. This is a very useful tool to know about in making space in your pieces of art. The other important element is shape. If you make the shape large in the beginning and make it smaller as you draw it along the page you also get an effect that it was using less space. I don’t feel that texture and value has all that much to do with space because the texture is just the feeling that the object or paper has. I can’t really think of anything that would make texture create space. The other element that really deals with space is color. If you have a light color in the front and then have a darker shade or color in the back it makes a great effect that the piece has space. The dark part makes it seem like a shadow while the light part will then seem like a larger space.

Space is a pretty hard thing to master because there are so many ways that you can show it that you need to always be thinking about what you’re putting on the page or you may mess up the space you already have. This can be a hard thing to think about even though it is one of the most important. It can be hard to think about because you get so focused on the objects and the concept of the piece that you don’t think that much about shading and how much space you want to include in the artwork. I will try to accompany this into our next art project.

As I look back at the pieces of art that I have already created so far in this semester I feel that I have improved dramatically. After doing some of the styles and ideas I have given art much more respect than I had before. When I first saw are as a young boy I thought it was just a bunch of paint on a canvas or a picture someone imagined in their head and thought anyone could do that. Now after painting and drawing these things I have seen how difficult they are to actually do. That isn’t even the most important thing though because the thought behind the art is what is important. The different objects and colors put in certain spots for a reason is what I have been amazed at. Some of the pieces that I have seen for so long didn’t mean anything to me until I really thought about what they were getting at and what they were intended to be. In this aspect I feel that I have come a very long way as an artist and someone who admires art.

Another part that I feel that I have stepped up considerably is with my color selection. I feel that I have been making things lighter and brighter when I should be and making things darker and gloomy when they should be. These both have made my pieces of art look better and stand out more than my other paintings have in the past. Overall I feel good about how I have matured as an artist and a person who enjoys thinking about art. I look forward to my next two pieces of the collage and the self-portrait that is due on Tuesday. I feel that my collage is very good and fits the requirements perfectly.

Texture and Emotion

There are many ways that texture can evoke emotion. Texture is a very important factor in the way people feel about art because it gives the piece that “extra edge” so to speak. An artist can manipulate his or her work by adding more or less texture to the piece that they are working on.

If you are painting mountains you wouldn’t want to use a flat surface for them. You would want to put the paint on really thick and jagged so it gives the person viewing it a better idea of what you are drawing. If someone sees the jagged brush marks for these mountains they will feel like they are actually there instead of not really being totally into the piece. Another great example of this is the ocean. The more or less of waves you put in would give the viewer a better sense of a calm sea or violent windy sea. This all needs to be thought of by the painter so that they can try to get their point of view across to the people looking at their work. The difference between the calm sea and the rough sea is that the people will feel more calm and relaxed while seeing this type. If they look and a violent sea they may be scared or may become more aggressive because of the jagged waves. There are also many more things that would be great examples of this like dirt, streets, people, and pretty much everything else you can think of. Every object has a certain texture that makes it different from other objects.

This is why you need to think about what our trying to paint and that texture will make the viewer feel the painting instead of just seeing the work. People will most likely like your work better if you have these differences in texture rather than just making all your pieces smooth.

Chapter 5 and Article

While I was reading the article I thought that the color of your business makes you more/less money. The article had an example about a hot dog business that changed the color of the walls inside the restaurant and it boosted the income by 7 percent. If you were a business man you need to think about this becasue you could be losing income if you have bad colors on the wall. This was very surprising because most people probably do not think about this that much when making a business. While I was reading chapter five I really liked how they wrote about intensity. I looked at my own painting and thought about if it could have been better by using this. If I would have not used my black as much I could have made the painting lighter and easier to invision the abstract part of the painting. Another thing that I read about in the article was that colos can relieve stress. I think that is true because I like being in lighter rooms rather than being in dark rooms. One of the reasons is because I am usually tired in class from school and baseball so if I’m in a dark room it makes me want to sleep. Also it makes me feel better if the room is light and it makes me open up more in class. Otherwise I don’t really feel like participating.
